UCAP Test Bench

Ultracapacitors (UCAP) are high capacity electrochemical capacitors that bridge the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. They typically store 10-100 times more energy per unit volume or mass than electrolytic capacitors, can accept and deliver charge much faster than batteries, and tolerate many more charge and discharge cycles (but are ~10 times larger) than rechargeable batteries.
In many applications (like locomotion) UCAPs are charged and discharged many times and face aging that appears in form of diminishing capacitance (C) and increasing DC equivalent serial resistance (ESRDC). When these two parameters reach limits defined by manufacturers, UCAPs do not perform their function and have to be replaced, therefore control of these parameters is necessary.
MB Dukubu in cooperation with Siemens AG and Siemens OYL have developed UCAP test bench and tools for UCAP aging evaluation. Tests are performed on locomotives Siemens Eurorunner 20 CF (owner JSC Lithuanian Railways), UCAPs with discharge currents up to 3000 A can be measured, Matlab® is used to calculate and obtain results.
